Over the years, Instagram has had a continuous growth rate and
gains millions and millions of new followers every year. In June 2018,
Instagram announced that they have finally reached 1 billion users, after
passing 800 million users in September 2018 and having 500 million active users
daily. The question is: How does Instagram still create attraction for new
users? Since the app doesn't change its concept in posting pictures on your
feed for all your friends to see, they need to create different features that
make users want to continue to use the app.
One thing that Instagram has done to keep the users rolling in, is
there newest launch: IGTV. IGTV is basically a mini television site that allows
you to post videos up to a hour long for your followers to watch. By allowing
this new accessory to the app, Instagram is now ready to compete with other big-name
apps like Snapchat, Twitter, and the biggest yet, YouTube. While Snapchat's
daily user count grew 2.13 percent in Q1 2018 to 191 million users, and Facebooks
monthly count grew 3.1 percent to reach 2.196 billion users, Instagram is
growing about 5 percent per quarter.
Since Instagram’s launch back in October of 2010, their growth has
been constant. In my Media Law and Literacy class, we talked about bell curves
and power curves and when you look at Instagram’s bell curve you see that they
are past the pioneer phase, early adopters phase, over the tipping point, and
now they are closer to the end of the late adopter’s phase but not fully into
the laggard’s phase. I say this because they still continue to get millions and
millions of followers every year and their decline in followers has not dropped
at all yet. As you can see in the photo above, Instagram has only continued to grow throughout the years with no sign in dropping users any time soon.
So to answer my question above, I believe that Instagram is making all the appropriate moves in making sure that they are staying relevant to have people to continue to want to join their app.
